Wednesday, April 12, 2023
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Eastern Time Zone

Description

Health care facilities covered under the ADA have an obligation to provide necessary reasonable modifications to patients with disabilities. During this program, attendees will have the opportunity to ask ADA professionals questions about Reasonable Modification of Policies, Practices and Procedures in Health Care Settings, such as, when do health care facilities need to provide a sign language interpreter? Can a health care facility refuse a service animal? Are small health care offices ever exempt from providing accommodations?

To ensure your question is answered during the session, individuals are highly encouraged to submit their questions ahead of time via the registration website (the option to submit questions is available once you have registered for the session).

Sign Language Interpreters and Human Generated Real-Time Captioning will be provided for this session.

Questions for presenters:

1 In a newly constructed health care facility that has kiosks for patient to check in for appointments, is it compliant for staff to assist patients to use the kiosk because they are not accessible to patients that are blind?
2 Does a medical building need to have more accessible parking spaces than normally required in the standards for the number of parking spaces.
3 I have specific questions about the DeafBlind customer. The DeafBlind is not able to see an interpreter on the VRI so is there more specific information about what are the recommendations for the medical community to understand and use as guidelines than thinking that the VRI is a good fit all solution>
4 If a facility provides portable steps up to a prone breast biopsy table, are they also required to provide a ramp or some portable lift so that it can also be used by wheelchair users?
6 Many people with disabilities experience debilitating symptoms (e.g. migraines, seizures, asthma attacks, anaphylaxis, etc.) from fragrance exposure. Is it legal for a healthcare facility to refuse to switch to fragrance-free cleaning products or refuse to eliminate unnecessary fragrances (e.g. air fresheners, Febreze, essential oil diffusers) when requested as an accommodation by patients with fragrance-reactive disabilities?
7 Fold down grab bars in Toilet Rooms. Can they be used in Rooms intended to meet 2010 ADA 213 scoping requirements? ...and when? ... how about in Bariatric Units? ...or Long Term Care Assisted Living?
8 2010 ADA Standard 223 defines a minimum stay for consideration for scoping considerations in Medical Care facilities and then in 223.3 gives scoping requirement for Long Term Care facilities. Is there a minimum length of stay for such scoping or is that left to the licensing authority? Is there a Federal standard for the definition of "Long Term"?
9 When a Deaf patient is admitted to a hospital or in-patient treatment facility, does the facility need to provide ASL interpreters if they are requested, or is the facility allowed to instead provide other options, such as written communication?
